Proverbs 16:18-19 Pride comes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. It is better to be of a lowly spirit with the poor than to divide the spoil with the proud.
The spirit of pride is dangerous. It is a deceptive spirit that creeps into the hearts of men making them think that their material physical attributes or their intellect make them more important than others. A prideful spirit chokes the life from others to exalt itself. At some point in our lives, we have all been presented with this spirit either in ourselves, or in the life of someone else. The dangerous thing about pride is that it makes the person carrying the spirit live a lie.
In reality, we are all sinners saved by the grace and blood of Jesus Christ. If if were not for Him dying on the cross, we would not have redemption and the entire world would be lost. James 4:6 states that God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. The verse then goes on to say, “humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.” Are you humbling yourself in the presence of our almighty God today?
Satan tries to disguise himself in many ways. When he uses the mask of pride, he is being sneaky and deceptive, trying to trick the person or people that they are more important because there is something greater, or more special about them. As stated earlier, he uses our education, our physical appearance, our intelligence, or our affiliations to make us believe this lie.
Philippians 2:3 states, “Let nothing be done through strife or vain glory, but in lowliness of mind, let each esteem others better than himself.” We are to be concerned for the interests of other people. Ask yourself today how you can be a blessing to someone else. Take pride out of your life.
Pride is also the cause of strife. Proverbs 13:10 states, “By pride comes nothing but strife, but with the well advised is wisdom.” Pride makes us look foolish in the eyes of God and man. Pride can cause you to fail in life, because God himself will resist you. So, examine yourself. Could it be that in some way you could possess the spirit of pride? I had to ask this question of myself. If the answer to this question is “yes” don’t condemn yourself. Ask for forgiveness, change your heart, and move on. God gives grace to the humble. He will give you wisdom about how to conduct yourself in this world so that you can succeed in life!
Lord, help us today to resist pride. Humble us under your hand, and give us wisdom. Amen.
